My son introduced me to YouTube.com this past week. It’s a video blog website. While some of the videos aren’t too sharp in picture quality, the content provided is actually pretty good.
But before you visit, a little word of caution: some of the videos on YouTube.com aren’t appropriate for Christian families so view wisely! I’ve also discovered YouTube.com doesn’t have the best search engine capabilities so you’ll have to weed through a lot of off-target videos before you find quality videos. But annoyances aside, you can’t beat free tutorials.

I’ve been in a browsing mood lately. I get that way sometimes when I just need to slow down, but don’t quite know what to do with myself. I could be reading up on how to shoot great photographs, or I could be testing out my new Nikon D-80 camera. I could even be hunting down paying writing gigs, but instead, I’ve left the world of reality behind to explore the works of photographers who have no problem manipulating their photographs and presenting us, the viewers, with great works of fine art.

Every Artist Must Start At The Beginning

As I browse from website to website, I can’t help but feel inspired. Each photographer has a very unique way of combining images, of manipulating photos, and of telling stories. Each photographer has a story to share and their images tell their stories beautifully.
Some photographers use collage techniques, others layer one photo on top another to provide a completely new image, some use their photographs as the basis of oil paintings or altered art, and others use a combination of techniques to turn their photos into wonderful works of art.
Two photographers really stand out to me. Their work is flawless, brilliant, and invigorating. Their work makes me want to strive for perfection!
Thomas Herbrich is simply amazing! He opened his studio in 1983 and mostly works with advertising agencies. Early on in his career, he ran a conventional photography business, but when a light bulb went on his work was completely transformed. Today, his photography work isn’t just about shooting still pictures; it’s a compilation of various images: some images require the building of complete sets, others use people in front of green screens, and others are images taken throughout the course of his career.

Carolyn Quan’s work is breathtaking! She caught my eye a few months back when I first began to consider creative photography as a serious business venture. Carolyn spent 20 years in the commercial art field before launching a career as a fine arts photographer in 2002. Today, she owns an art gallery in Lahaina, Maui where she showcases the work of six artists, including her photo collages.
I’ve known for quite some time that I didn’t just want to take great photos. I wanted to create art. I wanted to develop images that were worthy of being hung on museum walls and I wanted images that told stories and offered inspiration, hope, and even joy. But I wasn’t sure I could do it, I’m still not sure. But one thing’s certain…when I visit these two websites I walk away inspired and full of hope.
