Develop, Print, & Share Photographs

Thursday, December 14th, 2006 by Alyice

I love to take pictures. In fact, I have a 32 gallon plastic tote filled with negatives and another 32 gallon tote filled with photographs—all from the last sixteen years of my life. And now, thanks to digital film, I have an entire computer file full of .jpeg images! Yes, you could say I am addicted to snapping pictures.

I even have my photographs organized by event! At first, I tried to organize my photographs in a shoebox type system, but I found the pictures were easily bent and smudges from the oils of our hands made it difficult to truly appreciate certain pictures.

Then a few years ago, I discovered the art of scrapbooking. I thought I’d have a blast creating artistic pages, but soon discovered that I was too antsy and impatient to take my time. I wanted all my photographs in those scrapbooks ASAP!

Well, anyone who knows anything about scrapbooks knows that’s impossible. Even if you simply cut out images, add dates, and a few one liners (as I did), a scrapbook can take an entire month to put together—and that’s spending one to two hours a day on the project!

So my scrapbook projects have since gone in spurts. When I have an urge to create with paper, I pull out the scrapbooks, walk down memory lane with my kids, and begin the process of cutting and pasting. And when I don’t have the urge to sit for hours at a time, in front of old photographs, I ignore them—letting my photographs sit in those plastic totes, sight unseen.

But, thanks to modern technology, I have a new way to scrapbook and I love it! Here’s how it works:

  1. Simply scan my old photographs onto my computer.
  2. Save my photographs as .jpeg images.
  3. Organize my photographs by theme, date, or person.
  4. Play with them in PaintShop Pro to adjust color, clarity, etc.
  5. Upload to a print-on-demand photo printing service.
  6. Arrange the photographs onto the pages of photo books or mini-albums.
  7. Add a few one-liners or paragraphs.
  8. Double check the layout, clarity of photos, and spelling.
  9. Then order!

I Recommend

Photo Books

Your purchase
supports this site.

In 5 to 7 days, and after three hours of work, I have my completed albums and I don’t even have to worry about photographs coming unglued, or finding a place to store my bulky scrapbooks!

Of course, right now my photo books and mini-albums (a.k.a scrapbooks)
Do not look anything like the works of great artists, but in time I hope to discover the secrets of Photoshop, design my own layouts, upload full pages, and avoid using the ready-made layouts.

If you use a digital camera and have never thought to print out your pictures, I encourage you to give print-on-demand photo albums a try. They even make great presents! I just designed simple mini-albums of my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary to send to all my in-laws instead of Christmas cards.

(I can’t think of a better way to test a photo printer, can you?

Let’s make an impact!
