Beresford Birthday Parties

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007 by Alyice

My neighbor had her son’s first birthday party at a local hotel so I thought it would be nice to give the gift of photography. I had a blast snapping photos of her little one playing with his cake and his new toys. He’s such a good baby and so adorable.

Near the end of the event, I was asked to shoot a few family photos of visiting relatives. We got the whole gang together and then broke the group down for a couple of family shots. But it was this little guy that just captured my heart! His grandma asked me to snap a few shots of him and I couldn’t resist. He has such character. Doesn’t he look like he belongs on a baby food label?

Photos Of Old Cars

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 by Alyice

A gal in my photography group just lost everything on her hard drive when it crashed. Can you say, OUCH?! My computer crashed twice last year so I am pretty good about backing up client files and such, but really bad about backing up personal files and photos. So I’m heeding her advice and spending this week cleaning up my files and backing them up along the way.

As I was cleaning up my photos—deleting the blurred, useless photos and tweaking old photos—I came across two old cars I snapped over the summer. There’s an old highway that I love to travel down just to get a sense of peace. There’s nothing fascinating about the highway—just a lot of empty space and farm land. But one day, as I was driving along the highway, I spotted two really cool cars. They were beat up, run down, and undriveable, but they had character! So much character that I wish I had space for them just so I can use them as props.

Not wanting to let the moment go by, I went home, got my camera, and drove back to take a few quick snap shots. Yes, this is another one of those, “Don’t leave home without your camera” lessons because you never know when it will come in handy.

Here’s a before and after photo of the front end—as you can see, I try not to let my camera make color decisions so I can tweak them later in Photoshop® (my digital darkroom!). What I like about keeping the colors flat is that I can adjust the colors to fit my mood. Whether I want something bright and cheery, dark and rich, flat and dull, or something in between I can do it so long as my camera doesn’t make the color choices for me. I just adjust the hues and saturation, up the contract, play with the lighting, and add a little color variation. Eventually, I want to shoot everything in raw—but for now, I would just like to be able to master my camera.

And here’s a photo of the entire car. Isn’t she a beaut? Okay, so she needs work, but she sure doesn’t lack charm!
