I am in no way an expert when it comes to using digital software to enhance photos or paintings, but I do have to admit that I “love” what digital software can do!

Sunset & A Tree © Alyice Edrich, 2009
As I was painting a new tree using the techniques I learned from Sponge Painting, by Terrence Tse, I noticed that the image would make a great greeting card so I stopped midstream. I let the paint dry, scanned the image, and played with it in Paint Shop Pro.
I started by removing the digital noise, then I removed the circles because I felt they were distracting. Next, I added a texture to the overall image to “hide” some of the residue left from cloning out the circles. Then I clarified the image, burned the sky, upped the contrast, and finally, added a border. Once saved, I resized the image and used the unsharp mask to “crisp” things up.
Now, I can go back to playing with my paints and adding more “stuff” to the image. I’m not really sure where I want to go from here, but I’ve always wanted to create a “busy” background and I’ve decided to just give it a shot. Whether it turns out or not, I’ve already got a great greeting card out of it.

You are so right about finishing traditional art by using the computer. Sometimes scanning doesn’t quite capture the original quality so using software like photoshop can give it more vibrance than the scan!

At first I thought I wasn’t scanning the images correctly but then I realized it’s simply the process.
