This year, thanks to a challenge over at “The Latest Trends In Mixed Media Arts” I made Christmas ornaments. I used to make them every year with the kids, but nine years ago the kids outgrew “arts and crafts” so I put away my creative thinking cap. I was drawn to this challenge because it meant I had to stretch myself artistically and remember what it was like to create ornaments without the kids, just like “before I had the kids”.

I started by making dough out of cinnamon, apple sauce, water, and craft glue. Once I kneaded the dough, I rolled it out—in small portions—with a rolling pin. Then I cut out the shapes using cookie cutters. I allowed the dough to dry overnight on a wire rack so that the air could circulate around the entire ornament. The next day, the ornaments were still a little moist so I had to be really careful with them. I took a sheet of background paper I had painted a few months back, traced each ornament onto the back of the paper and cut the paper out. Then I used Mod Podge to glue the papers to the ornaments. I allowed them to dry for a few hours before adding the embellishments. Once the embellishments were added, I sealed the front, back, and sides of each ornament with Mod Podge
and allowed them to dry, on the wire racks, over night.
Next year, I think I’ll try a new technique and push my creative talents just a little bit further.
Keep Creating
