This is a “catch all” canister I made for my art studio. It was so much fun to create and so easy! I took an old food canister, peeled off the paper label and covered it with white gesso. Once dried, I added a thin layer of molding paste and stuck on some old painted napkins. I let the molding paste dry until tacky, then carved the circles into the canister. After drying for twenty-four hours, I painted it. Another 24 hours later, I added a nice coat of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze.

Today I have the honor of being interviewed by Cyndi Lavin and showcased over at Layers Upon Layers: a blog dedicated to showcasing inspiring and professional mixed media artists, teaching techniques, and calls for art submissions. (Which is now hosted on Bliss Tree.)

Here’s a glimpse into the interview:
At this stage in my life I create intuitively. I just sit down and create until the piece starts looking like something I’d be satisfied with. It’s not always the best practice but there is so much structure and order in my life, on a daily basis, that it’s nice to not have to “think” about creating a certain way. And it’s refreshing and relaxing to just play with my art.

I have an infatuation with dead or dormant trees. There’s such character and strength within their naked limbs. They seem to cry out to me, calling me, beckoning me. Asking me to see them, to embrace them, to recognize them—asking me to care.

They remind me of the lost and lonely souls that walk our earth; the ones whom we see on a daily basis but are often too busy to care for, to interact with. How many times have we walked passed someone simply because they needed more of us than we could give? How many times have we turned the corner, hoping they didn’t see us, because we simply couldn’t be bothered? And yet, if we took a closer look, we’d see the beauty that lies within. We’d see the difference they have yet to make upon our lives, upon this earth.
And so it is with dormant and dead trees.
Give thanks…
